Regenerative Medicine

Biomedical Engineering, Biological Sciences, and Animal Science

Emma Breit

Class of 2022

Education: BS + MS Biological Sciences at Cal Poly

Biography:

Emma is interested in Regenerative Medicine because of its countless applications and is excited to join this field because it pushes the boundaries of modern medicine by combining biology and engineering. She believes it is the future for treating disease at its source and finding cures for otherwise difficult-to-treat illnesses. Although she is still exploring the different niches within this profession, she is especially looking forward to learning about tissue engineering for the use of preclinical research. After she earns her degree, she hopes to work in translational medicine and research because of its appealing "bench-to-bedside" mindset.

Internship:

Emma is interning at ViaCyte, a regenerative medicine company developing a cure for Type I Diabetes. She is working with the Cell Process Engineering Team to optimize processes for stem cell expansion and differentiation into pancreatic progenitor cells under the supervision of Emily Benz, an alum of the Regenerative Medicine program. Emma's particular project will focus on the impact of bioreactor agitation speeds on the endocrine output of differentiated PEC aggregates.
