Myojung Yang

Class of 2021

Education: Blended BS + MS Animal Science at Cal Poly

Biography

Myojung is an Animal Science major from Cal Poly, graduating in Spring 2019. She finds the vast potential for the use of stem cells in medicine and laboratory testing to be fascinating, and is excited to learn more about the different ways in which they can be used to better the understanding of the way cells react and develop in the body. Specifically, she would like to focus on the use of stem cells to model organs to determine the effects that different toxins may have on various tissues, as well as the potential in using stem cells to counteract damages that are caused due to toxicity. While she is not entirely sure where this experience will end up leading her to, Myojung tentatively plans to pursue a PhD in toxicology after she completes this program.

Myojung worked at Rubedo Life Sciences in drug development under Julian Klein. Their team explored treatments for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. At Rubedo, Myojung worked to develop an in-vitro model that can better help the understanding of the cellular interactions involved in IPF and aid in the testing of compounds to determine their effects on different cell types involved in the disease.
