Biography

Gina was interested in stem cell research because she believed it has the potential to treat many diseases/conditions that are thought to be incurable. She was particularly interested in how stem cells can be manipulated and modeled for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and melanoma. The CIRM program provided a great foundation to explore the exciting field of regenerative medicine, and after completion, she hoped to continue and translate this research into an industry setting.

Gina was interning at Organovo in the Therapeutics group and her PI was Dr. Benjamin Shepherd. Her project involved the optimization of hydrogel compositions to create constructs for therapeutic research purposes. She was directly involved with the project and performed all the experiments and assays associated with creating and evaluating the constructs.

After graduating, Gina obtained a position as a development engineer at Illumina.
