Biography

Ever since Ms. Lockwood’s 10th grade biology class, Krysten has been interested in medicine, immunology, and new treatment development. After receiving her BS in Biological Sciences from Cal Poly SLO, Krysten has been working as Medical Assistant (MA). As a MA she has been able to directly observe how many medical treatments improve patient’s lives. She is excited to continue her education and to be able to contribute to the improvement and development of these medications. After receiving her MS she hopes to pursue a PhD in order to be able to teach as well as continue research in this exciting field.

Krysten is currently an intern at Organovo Inc., a 3-D bioprinting tissue company in San Diego, CA under the supervision of scientist Vaidehi Johsi. As part of her internship, she will be further differentiating iPSCs under a variety of defined conditions and then evaluating their performance in bioprinted tissues. It is hoped that this approach could be exploited as an alternative cell source, particularly for cells such as hepatocytes which cannot be readily expanded ex vivo. Additionally, Krysten is expected to assist with other research performed by the Therapeutics R&D team, with the goal of generating data for Organovo’s planned IND submission.
